Do you plant vines? If you do, you’d want to build a trellis for them. A trellis not only will give your vines a structure to grow and thrive in, but also provide great decoration. In addition, building a trellis makes an excellent DIY project, too. In this post, we explain how to build DIY wire trellis on wall.
Tools and Materials
Before building a wire trellis for vines, you will need to prepare the tools and materials first. For this project, you will need the following
- Pen or marker
- Painter’s tape
- Level
- Hammer
- Wire cutters
- Needle-nose pliers
- Hammer drill with masonry bits
- Brick anchors
- 1/16th galvanized uncoated steel wire rope
- 1/16th aluminum ferrules
- Stainless steel screw eye hooks
Planning the Design
Planning the trellis design is next on our how to build DIY wire trellis on wall guide. How do you want your trellis to look like? Keep in mind that your vines will grow on the trellis. So, do take your plants into account.
Grab a pen and paper and start drawing sketches. The design can be a criss-cross design, stacked diamonds, open diamonds, closed diamonds, or straight lines. The more complicated the design, the more difficult the project will be.
Map Out the Design on a Wall
Once you have some designs, you can map them out in real life. That is, draw them on your walls and see if they are viable. This will take some time to do as you will not only transfer your sketches to a wall but also make precise measurements.
Create anchor points and make sure they are equally spaced and level. Fine tune the placement as much as possible. Don’t forget to mark out your drilling spots with a marker dot and tape. Double check your measurements before doing any drilling.
Install the Anchor Points
The next step on our how to build DIY wire trellis on wall is to install the anchor points. In other words, now it is time to drill. Use a hammer drill with a masonry bit to make shallow holes for the anchor points.
Insert the brick anchors into the wall and screw in eye hooks. 3-inch eye hooks will be a great option as they are long enough to provide some room to grow for vines and small enough they can visually disappear. Make sure that all anchor points are tight.
Stringing the Wire
Finally, string the wire rope to build the trellis. Your previous measurements should give you an idea about the length needed to create the trellis. Follow the design. Create a loop in each anchor point if you need to tighten the wire more.
Create small loops on the end of each strand and use ferrules to connect strands. You may need to cut certain parts of the wire so do prepare your wire cutter.
That’s how to build DIY wire trellis on wall. It is an easy and fun DIY project to do in the weekend. With a trellis, your vines will be able to grow better and thrive. Plus, since you get to shape the trellis however you like, the resulting shape will add a personal touch to the space.
